Powers of the courts of Judicial Magistrate, the Assistant Sessions Judge and Sessions Judge are prescribed in the Criminal Procedure Code.

The Civil cases relating to the family disputes including the dispute with regard to the matrimonial affairs, maintenance, recovery of dowry and custody of a child are filed before the Family Courts (Civil Judges); whereas the other civil matters relating to the dispute over property are filed before the Civil Courts according to their valuation.

The disputes between the landlords and tenants are filed before the Rent Controllers (Senior Civil Judges).

Each Province has its own High Court, therefore, there are 4 High Courts and the apex court i.e. Supreme Court at Islamabad with benches at all provincial Headquarters.

The District and Sessions Judge is over all Incharge of a Judicial District.

The territorial jurisdiction to the sub-ordinate courts i.e. Civil Judges/Judicial Magistrates and Senior Civil Judges is assigned through a special order by the District and Sessions Judge according to the police stations situated in the District.

Recently a newly promulgated Small Claims Ordinance has been made effective and the Courts under said Ordinance are to be designated. Similarly special jurisdiction has been assigned to the Court No.IXth Senior Civil Judge for the entire District-East to dispose of the suits based on torts against the Government Officials.
